The Greatest Race of All Studio 10 Interview

Live acoustic performance of The Greatest Race of All by Warren Smith.

At last, a great song about Australia’s greatest race, The Melbourne Cup!

Woz Music Pty Ltd is excited to announce that after nearly 44 years, Warren Smith and Peter Liddell’s song “The Greatest Race of All” has been released.

This is the story of how it all came to be:

Peter Liddell started writing a song about The Melbourne Cup after Arwon won the race in 1978.

In 1980 Warren began playing guitar and Peter would teach him from time to time. They worked on the song together back then but nothing eventuated with it. Peter wasn’t happy with the words and he hoped Warren would do something with it one day.

Sadly Peter passed away in 2013. When Covid hit in early 2020, Warren recalled the song and what Peter had said to him years before and started playing around with it again and rewriting and updating the words. He especially thought it would be nice to get it to Peter’s mum who was now in her early 90’s!

Warren recorded a demo of it at home and played it to Peter’s mum and family and they loved it and they thanked him for thinking of it and bringing it back to life.

Warren was then lucky enough to get the opportunity to play it live and play the demo to Neil Wilson of The VRC. Neil also loved it and Warren realised then that the song could be enjoyed right across the country.

The following year in April 2021 whilst on a tour of the top end, Warren played the song and it was met with huge applause and a standing ovation. Straight after this, a gentleman walked over to Warren to congratulate him on the song and introduced himself. It was none other than ex jockey / trainer Pat Trotter and they chatted about his rides on Reckless in the 1977 Melbourne Cup when he came second by half length to Gold And Black and his wins in the Sydney Cup and Adelaide Cups amongst other wins that year. He talked fondly of his connection with Tommy Woodcock and Warren thought wow, now there’s an Australian sporting history lesson right there.

Pat commented that it was the best horse racing song he had ever heard and urged Warren to release it so that all of Australia could enjoy it and that it should be played at The Cup.

Warren kept re-working the song and re-writing the lyrics during Covid times, until every word meant something special.
Further inspiration for the new lyrics came when he watched the movie ‘Ride Like a Girl’ as he noted that Michelle Payne as a young girl had always “dreamed of winning The Melbourne Cup” so the first line of the song was born. And from the movie ‘The Cup’ came the line “Ollie’s bravest win”.

In 2022 Warren set out to produce the song, turning to some trusted friends that he had performed with over the years to bring it all together and the results are there for the listening.

During this time Warren also had amazing equine artist Kristin Hardiman paint the cover art and it has to be said that the painting definitely captures the essence of the moment as does the song itself.

It is truly an inspiring anthem for a very historic event in Australia’s sporting history and a fitting tribute to Warren’s late family friend Peter Liddell.
